What is the difference between sanitizing and sterilizing?

Sterilizing is the removal of ALL possible contaminants, which is nearly impossible in a home setting. Sanitizing reduces the contaminant to an acceptable level that won't infect the beer. Bleach is a very common sanitizing agent.
